Yasmin John-Thorpe

Bio: Yasmin John-Thorpe was born in the Caribbean, on the island of Trinidad, and came to Canada in 1975. She is married with two daughters and one grandson. Yasmin is a children's author, fiction and non-fiction writer and mentor. Two of her children's short stories were published in a school reader by MacMillan Publishing, London, England. She was one of only four authors, whose short story was selected by GlaxoSmithKline Phamaceutical for publication in a children's book for hospitalize young children. Yasmin has mentored young and older writers, by going into schools to assist young students to hone their creative writing abilities and by teaching writing classes, at Okanagan College, Penticton Campus for mature writers.

In 1994, with the help of four other writers, she co-founded the Penticton Writers and Publishers, a local group of writers helping writers. Since 2007, she has organized the South Okanagan Raise a Reader Program with the Penticton Herald.

After hosting several creative writing contests for young Okanagan Valley writers, Yasmin launched the British Columbia Youth Writers Camp for 8 - 18 year old writers, held in July annually at Penticton Campus of Okanagan College. Yasmin has trekked the Camino de Santiago de Compostela, a pilgrimage walk of 500 miles, across Southern France and Northern Spain, to raise funds for the Raise a Reader program.

Awards:Yasmin has received the 'Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia Community Service Award' for her volunteer work, and was recently honoured with an Honorary Fellow Award, from Okanagan College, for her work with Literacy and youth.

In 2013, BC School Division 67 presented Yasmin with a commemorative plaque, recognizing of her contribution to literacy by managing the South Okanagan Raise-A-Reader Program for six years.

In 2015, Yasmin was the recipient of the Penticton & District Community Arts Council Literary award.
