In 1974 John became a volunteer at the Vancouver Crisis Center. Five years later, he was a staff member in charge of the 'Youth Line', the first teen crisis line in B.C. Concurrently, he also ran the visiting team, the 'Flying Squad'.
In 1978 he enrolled in Simon Fraser University's 'Professional Development Program' which qualified him to teach elementary school. He moved to northern BC where he taught grades 6, 7 and 8. He retired from teaching in 2011.
In the fall of 2012, Doug Savage approached him for help in writing a book about a very special moment with a hockey hero that took place in Winnipeg, during the spring of 1983. The resulting collaboration, 'My New Hero', chronicles the journey of a typical young Canadian boy going through his formative years in Winnipeg from 1969 to 1987.Website: www.mynewhero.caBook(s):
